1207, après la mort de son père, il fut déclaré co-régent par sa mère à l'âge de 13 ans.
1213, après la mort de sa mère, il devint roi.
1221/1222, les premières attaques des Mongols furent repoussées par les troupes géorgiennes.
1223, peu après, il mourut de ses blessures à Bagavan dans la province de Bagrévand et les funérailles eurent lieu à Mtskheta, à la cathédrale de Svétitskhovéli.
Il fut inhumé dans le monastère de Ghélati.
Il fut considéré comme le dernier souverain de l'âge d'or de la Géorgie.
(Sa soeur cadette Rousoudan lui succéda, elle fit allégeance aux Mongols et elle fut contrainte d'envoyer son fils David VI ou IV Narin à Karakorum).
